Street Sweeping
You may have noticed that Westbrook sweeps streets frequently and all year round. We do this for several reasons.
- Increased safety - Sand on the road increases traction and safety during slippery winter conditions but can make things less safe the rest of the year. By sweeping we reduce that possibility of pedestrians or vehicles slipping on loose sand.
- Decreased pollution - When snow melts or it rains, sand and litter are washed from the street into storm drains along the road. Those drains are NOT connected to the sanitary sewer system but rather drain to whatever body of water is closest without treatment. Some of the sand settles into a sump at the bottom of the drain but the rest is carried into the nearest waterbody alone with litter and other pollutants.
- Increased efficiency - There are over 3,000 storm drains in Westbrook and sand, leaves and heavy litter that settles into the sump at the bottom of them must be cleaned out every other year. It is much faster and cost efficient to sweep up that material before it gets into the storm drains.
