What you Need to Register Your Vehicle

The City of Westbrook is an agent for the Bureau of Motor Vehicles. This means the city has authorization from the State of Maine to process re-registrations and new registrations on most passenger type vehicles and commercial vehicles registered for gross weight less than 6,000 pounds.

State of Maine Renewal

  • Proof of Insurance showing VIN# and effective dates of policy
  • Previous Registration
  • Current Mileage
  • If you have not previously registered your vehicle in Westbrook, you will need to provide proof of residency.

As long as you have not relocated, this service is also available online for your convenience.

New Registration- In-State Dealer Sale

  • Proof of residency and proof of insurance showing VIN# and effective dates of policy
  • Dealer Invoice-AKA Purchase and Sales Agreement-
  • Lienholder name and address if vehicle is financed
  • Blue Application for Title (2000 and newer)
  • Previous Registrations (if you are taking credit from a vehicle previously registered in your name and that you no longer are in possession of)
  • Window Sticker showing Manufacturer’s Suggest Retail Price (if vehicle has never been titled)

New Registration-Out of State Dealer Sale

  • Proof of residency
  • Proof of insurance showing VIN# and effective dates of policy
  • Title or Blue Copy of Title Application
  • Dealer Invoice-AKA Purchase and Sales Agreement *
  • Lienholder name and address if vehicle is financed
  • Window Sticker showing Manufacturer’s Suggest Retail Price (if vehicle has never been titled)

*Note: You will have to pay sales tax on a vehicle purchased out of state unless you have proof of paying the sales tax in the state of purchase. If 

New Registration-Private Owner

  • Proof of residency
  • Proof of insurance showing VIN# and effective dates of policy
  • Complete Bill of Sale (Must have year, make, model, VIN number, current mileage, date of sale, amount paid, Names & addresses of both seller and buyer and signatures of both buyer and seller
  • Previous owner’s Original Title Certificate if the vehicle is 2000 or newer. (Must be fully completed on the back side by the seller, showing who the vehicle is being sold to, current mileage, date of sale and must be signed by each of the individuals listed on the front of the title. The title must be free of liens)

New Maine Resident

  • Proof of residency
  • Proof of insurance showing VIN# and effective dates of policy
  • Registration from previous residence
  • Original Title Certificate if the vehicle is 2000 or newer. (The state of Maine will honor other states title laws)

Specialty Plates

We offer a wide variety of specialty plates (PDF). To get a vanity plate you must go to a Branch of the Bureau of Motor Vehicle.
