Saccarappa Park

What is the Saccarappa Park Redevelopment Project?

The Saccarappa Park Redevelopment Project is an initiative by the City of Westbrook to restore a 1.06-acre parcel located at 885 Main Street. Located at the corner of Main and Bridge Street in the heart of Westbrook's downtown, this project will be partially funded by a grant and loan from the Maine Department of Economic and Community Development's Brownfields Revolving Loan Fund (DECD's BRLF).

What will the funds be used for?

The funds from DECD's BRLF will be used to address lingering environmental concerns related to the site's long history of industrial use. Available funds will be used to design an open-air structure along the Presumpscot River and make ground improvements to lay the foundation for Westbrook's future four-season public facility. Additional funds will be available for a limited amount of non-cleanup activities related to the site's redevelopment. They will also be available to construct the open-air structure with the input from a robust community engagement process. This process included a questionnaire to the public soliciting input, two Community Charrettes (public meetings discussing the project), and oversight from the Brownfields Advisory Committee.

What is the City's vision for the restoration?

Given the site's physical constraints and its unique opportunities—such as direct connections to the Riverwalk, trails, and Saccarappa Island—the City envisions transforming the area from a temporary parking lot into a vibrant, four-season, multifunctional community space. This redevelopment aims to serve residents, businesses, and visitors year-round, while establishing the site as a highly visible destination and a valuable public amenity that celebrates the Presumpscot River, Saccarappa Falls, and downtown Westbrook.
