About the Project

The Riverwalk North Project is a transformational initiative to expand Westbrook’s popular riverwalk and bring people even closer to the scenic Presumpscot River. Once complete, it will form a 2-mile loop connecting the north and south sides of the river, offering safe, accessible pathways for walking, running, and recreation.

This project extends from Bridge Street at the pedestrian bridge to Brown Street and Mentor Street before reconnecting with the riverwalk at the Cornelia Warren Recreation Area via the "Black Bridge". Within this route, a 2,500-foot stretch from Bridge Street to Water Street will be built directly along the river.

Planning began over 10 years ago with the vision of linking neighborhoods to downtown and improving access to the community. After initial designs became outdated in both regulatory approvals and cost, the City secured a $4 million U.S. EPA Brownfields Cleanup Grant in 2024 to support updated design and construction. This grant alleviates the taxpayer burden for this project.
